More stuff from Cupertino

I've been waiting for this: Jobs' first public discussion of Zune: http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2143

Hey, I'm just happy we're making enough of a mindshare dent that he's having to talk about us. I think it's a mistake for him to bring up sharing at all. When Realnetworks' lead was huge, they never mentioned Windows Media at all until they were more or less forced, and then they referred to us a "brand X" for quite a while. Smart - why feed the competition's buzz?

I won't write a huge refutation, but some of the comments ring true to me: http://forums.appleinsider.com/showpost.php?p=982007&postcount=11. The leader can't get too cocky.

There really must be a thin line between genius and insanity. I can't figure out which side of the line Jobs is on sometimes. He's the most back and forth guy in the entire tech industry. Next, he'll be "pioneering" sharing in his new line of ipods. And, the world will emit a thunderous cheer for Apple's innovation...[\end sarcasm]

Nobody should underestimate Jobs. There used to be lots of reason to doubt his competence. The old story (basically stolen from _Infinite_Loop_) was:

He started Apple riding on Woz' genius, then got kicked out for being a tyrant. Then he went and failed at Next. Then Pixar took off because Lassiter is a genius and kept Jobs at a distance.

This story is now clearly defunct. By talking them out of hundreds of millions of dollars for Next, then fixing the dying Apple, Jobs has swung the balance way over towards the business genius side of the scale.

The virus loaded on video iPods shipped since Sep 12 must be embarrassing - especially to a company like Apple that likes to play up its quality-control...
I'd like to see Jobs' response to that in his next interview.

I do not think the virus on some iPods 5.5G will affect Apple. They reacted quickly and posted instructions of how to resolve the problem.

I know I won't be affected because I use Mac. :D

I do not think Zune is a threat to the iPod. Dell tried and failed with the DJ. The "iPod Killers" always boast of doing more things than the iPod like FM, voice recording, etc. Things that most people would not use.

The iPod is about doing the things better, easier.

I don't think the virus will have much of an effect on Apple, either. Although I think their trying to deflect responsibility to Microsoft ("we're mad at Windows") is hollow.

But, to your point... if the iPod is about doing things better, easier... do you really thing sharing earbuds is better and easier than a 7-second wireless song transfer?

I don't.

The earbuds will still be there in three days.

I'm not going to stand there and let someone listen over my shoulder for 3 days... bring on the wireless transfers.

Hey David, I just setup a new Zune site to replace Zunelicious...

You can check it out at www.zunecorps.com

I have added a section to the forums for people to leave input/suggestions/complaints for the Zune Team...so once things get going it might be good to check out what the community is saying.

Thanks,

-Charlie

Sharing earbuds is easier. My 5 years old cousin can do that, my grandma can do that. Better for most people, yes.

Will Microsoft include an AV for the Zune?
