Scoble's Post
http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/2006/10/26/my-thoughts-about-zune-vs-ipod/
Scoble's points are mostly good ones. Some specific thoughts:
- A lot of the points make me say "yeah, but wait a bit." It's not that we don't get Podcasting (Robert knows I'm among the loudest voices about Podcasting at Microsoft), it's that podcasting wasn't done in time. I don't expect anyone to buy based on my promises, but it's important to separate things we don't have at launch from comments about Zune's long term prospects.
- Like everyone, he liked the brown better once he saw it in person. Yay!
- From my previous post - updateability is key.
- Conversationality created by white headphones. I don't agree here. In 2002, when white headphones said something about you - you were an early adopter cool geek guy with an iPod. Now all white headphones say is that you've got a body temperature over 96 degrees.
- His point about the edge case - early adopter geeks like me - is a good one. We very solidly focussed on mainstream use cases this release (e.g., 99% of ipods get used for music, only 15% for podcasts, video and everything else is less). I think his scenarios (Rocketboom, ZeFrank, Videoblogs, etc...) are good ones, but only if you make those experiences more mainstream rather than focussing early adopters. Many other mp3 player manufacturers (e.g., Archos, Audiotron) have gotten sucked into this early adopter trap in the past and ended up with a loyal, fervent - but niche - user base.
- Free me from DRM? Huh? Zune works great if you're 100% into DRM-free mp3, aac, mpeg-4, or h.264 content. Go be free.
- Robert likes subscriptions; I agree the potential there is huge. The key will be building out the experiences around subscription music until they're irresistable.
- *sigh*. The round dpad. I think Robert is 100% right here. iPod users think the round thing will be a scrollwheel like the iPod. They "get it" after about 5 seconds on a Zune, and then don't look back. The iPod was like this at first for most people - they didn't expect the scrollwheel and struggled for 5 seconds, then figured it out. He's right that the team did a great job a making the dpad usability great, and even giving it some advantages over the scrollwheel.
- Robert remembers someone showing off the "little things" that ipod got right - the color coordinated iPod icons, the fact the device pauses when you unplug the headphones. Nice touches. Trust me, we're doing the right stuff here - I was the presenter in that meeting.

David,
You make good points.
I think the unfortunate thing is that once reviewers get their hands on Zune/Zune Marketplace, they are going to point out all the areas where they perceive Zune comes up short against expectations - no TV shows or Movies in Zune Marketplace, no podcasting support, extremely limited wi-fi features, etc. - that it might be challenging for Zune to recover. Those first impressions will be all over the press.
Best of luck at launch!
Scoble's interview helps sell the Zune in a very credible way.
Would it be possible - and advantageous - for Microsoft to *definitely* announce that certain features WILL be forthcoming? Like video sharing, video downloads from Marketplace, podcasting capabilities, etc.
Even if there is no timetable, I think just having this affirmed by Microsoft would make the decision to buy Zune a much easier one for many people.

It's true, they'll rip it apart. At the end of the day, it seems that MS just wants this thing to be a music player. They're going for the simple approach. They're not trying to "out-feature" anyone. Whether this approach will work is to be determined. But, they should have more time to work on the little things if they keep it simple like this. It doesn't get the hardcore guys excited but it ensure that the general public gets a bug free device. The big thing is will the general public download the zune marketplace software and run far, far away when they realize it has no tv shows, movies, or music videos? Who knows... Considering I'm getting a Zune and I don't want to see it sink like the Dell DJ's did, I hope not.
I am glad to hear that podcasting, scratch that, I mean netcasting will be worked on.
>>I am glad to hear that podcasting, scratch that, I mean netcasting will be worked on.
ZuneCasting? ;-)
I was going to buy an MP3 player this December. I am now going to have to think twice knowing that Zune does not have support for podcasting.
I disagree with Harvey. Microsoft should keep quiet and work. They tent to overpromise.
Why is having an upgrade weeks after the Zune is introduced a good thing? Not enough time to develop? Bugs?
The iPod is very easily upgraded. The iPod 5G got the games via an upgrade.
So, if David said that less than 15% of MP3 users watch videos, what is the advantage of having a slightly bigger screen but heavier and bigger Zune?
"So, if David said that less than 15% of MP3 users watch videos, what is the advantage of having a slightly bigger screen but heavier and bigger Zune?" - chris
Well, why don't the iPods just have a single line display that shows one song's information? Perhaps because people like to see a lot of information, and having a big screen makes things easier to navigate and gives you more capability in the UI. And it's pretty.
"The iPod was like this at first for most people - they didn't expect the scrollwheel and struggled for 5 seconds, then figured it out."
Because they had no choice? That's always a great reason for having to learn to use something.
"He's right that the team did a great job a making the dpad usability great, and even giving it some advantages over the scrollwheel."
Like?
"Robert remembers someone showing off the "little things" that ipod got right - the color coordinated iPod icons, the fact the device pauses when you unplug the headphones. Nice touches. Trust me, we're doing the right stuff here"
It's nice, and easier, to have something to copy from instead of coming up with it yourself. :)
Any idea when other parts of the world (e.g. Australia) would see Zune?
I think the Zune looks intresting, and I expected all the negativity early.
I'm in the markey for a new player and the Zune may get my buisness.
I do subscribe to many Podcasts,Now that It looks like the Zune will also eventually support this feature
I will now concider buying one.
@Aaron Axvig
Apple have something better than that, is called the iPod shuffle and is a huge seller. The new one is really cool. Too bad it cannot connect directly to the computer.
I don't buy the statement that "Podcasting wasn't done in time" What have you guys been doing for 2+ years. Let's face it, you are late in the game and you can't even ship a huge feature on time. That is retarded.
I agree with Josh re podcast support. You had tonnes of time. This wouldn't just have something to do with the name PODcast, would it? Just pick something else. It's a copout.
Man, how long do you guys think we've been doing this? I was in the room in January when we started whiteboarding. Yes, THIS January.
We'll ship podcasting, and we'll call it "Podcasting" when we do.

Dude,
Just a hint: when you're polishing up your resume, just say that you worked on product development at Microsoft. Don't mention the word "zune" unless the interviewer asks you specifically. Of course, if they say "anything I might have heard of?" you can just say "nah.. It was a minor product that never got off the ground."
Whatever you do, bail now. You're poison at Microsoft, because nobody wants to add someone from a failed project to their team. It's just superstition, and it's not fair, but that's the way it is.
Dug.
As being a very outspoken critic of this Zune release. You all could have really hit one out of the park on the podcasting front. With a WiFi device that worked in conjunction with integrated podcasting support the device could have updated itself anytime it connected to a WiFi hotspot! Put the podcatcher on the device tie it to wife. Integrate a GOOD directory and you have a major winner. Seperate the Mainstream Media Podcast with the Indie and you will make a lot of people happy and I will sing its praise every day.
I have to say that Podcasting should have been an important consideration for release, given the tight focus on audio related support. I have great respect for the choice not to deliver the full range of video at the moment, as a narrow targeted area of focus is what Microsoft has always been poor in achieving - but songs only with no podcasts is a little too narrow.

It feels a little rushed to make this Christmas.
Yawn
"No podcasting support" "How can you not have podcasting support?"
Blah blah blah. People keep talking about podcasts like they have a certain type of DRM on them that won't work on a zune. Because I do not use an iPod does that mean my PC does not support "podcasting" Hell I was listening to what has been deemed "podcasting" for years before a ipod ever came out.
An Mp3 is a Mp3 it does not make a difference when it comes to a player. Everyone that is going "No Podcasting support?!?!!!!" Need to learn a little.
Just so you know where I come from, I just placed an order for a new 80 GB iPod. Take this comment with a grain of salt if you will.
But don't take me an Apple zealot. I also have an XBox 360 and I love it. I'm in the market for good products.
Although I was curious about the Zune, the more I learned about it, the least interested (and more bored) I became with the whole thing. Come on! Brown as a way to differentiate from the iPod? Well, I guess making your product uncool is a sure way to make it different from the coolest gadget in town. What a strategy!
The Zune got people talking alright, but then it made them take a second look at the iPod and it came out ahead. It did for me, and I wasn't compelled enough to wait for the Zune to launch...
One good thing about Microsoft is that they have the money to stick around and try different strategies. However, for some customers that means waiting a couple of years before buying a new Microsoft product. You know, just to see if the company won't kill it after the first release.
I guess I mean to say that the list of features at launch are irrelevant for me, since I won't be taking another look at Zune for about a couple of years.
ghhhhhhhhhhg
From Tom:
"An Mp3 is a Mp3 it does not make a difference when it comes to a player. Everyone that is going "No Podcasting support?!?!!!!" Need to learn a little."
Tom - looks like you need the education here. Podcasts are not just MP3 files. They are rich media files you can subscribe to. The issue here is not about playing MP3 files - but that we will not be able to subscribe to the shows we like and have them sync up easily with the Zune when it is launched. Podcasts are much more than just MP3 files.
>>It's nice, and easier, to have something to copy from instead of coming up with it yourself. :)
Exactly! Just ask Apple about losing the patent case to Creative over their, I mean, Creative's UI.
It is also funny to hear people bashing how much time you had to add Podcasting given that a lot of podcasters are very unhappy with the screwups made over it in iTunes 7.
I recently found a very interesting website:
http://alreadylinked.com/
There you can purchase ad space for your Blog etc.
I totally agree with Todd Cochrane. To not have podcasting integrated is a total lack of competence. This is the future of freely distributed audio programs and the Zune is left out. It ads insult to injury when it even has wifi. You could sync your favorite podcasts onto your Zune from any wifi hotspot. That alone would make me through my iPod as far away as possible and get a zune the same day. If Microsoft spent more time on features for the Zune and less on advertising and catch fraises then I might consider getting one.
Podcasting is essential especialy when many major network broadcasters like the BBC are making vast quantities of there output available via this mechanism.
Having a simple way to subscribe is very important. If microsoft can deliver RSS support in outlook why cant they deliver it for Zune from the start.
Podcast support for Zune (audio and video):
