First round of NPD portable music numbers

Ooh, this is sweet. Zune's first week of sales; we were 9% of the units and 13% of the dollars. Obviously would be higher if you looked just at the HDD device market. Looks like most of the volume came out of Apple, which isn't surprising given that they were previously the only real player in the $200+ price bands.

A good start.

Week 1, when you were the only one's launching... If we use the drop shown on Amazon as an indicator, Wek 2 will show you at 1% or so... Stay tuned...

yeah anonymous 3:02, dont go by amazon. thats only a miniscule part of the zune sales venue. most people go to their local electronics store to pick up their zune.

well, back on topic, good job dave and company. the more zunes the merrier (literally), because the more people that have zunes, the more the 'social' aspect comes into play.

alas, i still havent found another zune to get 'social' with.

Its great that Zune has done well in its first week. However it will be more interesting to see how it does in its second and third week. I like the Zune and have a brown one, however I think the bad review is going to hurt the sale figure. I think you guys made one mistake. The device itself is great but in a rush to get to the market I feel a lot of bugs crept in. Also it would be hard to explane to people why features are missing even though it will come later.
I hope you guys do well. I like my Zune but was dissapointed with the product rollout.

Surely you guys know what kind of features are on the drawing board for the zune? I'd really like to see what kind of new features are planned for the future through software updates, kinda like the feature request log on Sourceforge. Then we could all vote on desired features, etc etc. I love how you guys are blogging & interacting with customers, but I want more details dammit! ;)

what rohit said is true.
i also have a brown zune, and i love it. its sad to know that people are not interested about it because of the bad talks about the zune and most of those people are ipod fanatics.
i hate the ipod, it's so plane and stupid even my old iriver made the ipod look bad. i know for a fact people buy the ipod for its name, not for the product. one day i went to bestbuy and asked a question to the customer assistance. i asked if any zunes have been returned. he said "no" I then asked him a curious question, "do people return their ipods?" he responded with a yes, saying that they get around 8 ipods returned a day, and many complains about the ipod. that was something i knew i should of brought my camera and recorded exactly what he said, so everyone can see how bad an ipod is.
i hope the zune developers bring a new update, or something to make the customers attractive to it again, because a lot of ipod fanatics are trash talking it making the rest of the people go with what those fanatics say.
i know the zune in time will destroy the ipod, but as for now...it looks really bad. hope you guys don't get discouraged about the posts, zune will win.

Oh and amazon is lame, i don't even use that website, i use overstock.com or yahoo.com

Well, not bad. But those numbers do not include the iPods sold at the Apple Retail and Online Stores.

Great insightful comment, but you're out of date. NPD recently added Apple's direct retail data.

David, can you shed some light on the following:

1. Before releasing Zune in the wild did Microsoft/Zune have a product roadmap laid out?
2. Would you say that your initial roadmap is on target with what users have expressed sofar or do you find yourselves having to do some drastic roadmap redrawing?
3. Does Zune piggy back on Microsoft's PMC efforts or did you guys start from scratch? If you did start from scratch, why?
4. Is your team large enough to work on new stuff as well as address urgent problems?

I guess I'm just looking for a bit of history. Zune has alot of potential but I think there are many people like myself waiting to see Microsoft's commitment in supporting/enhancing this new ecosystem. Good luck and much success!

David, I listened to a interview you did on ZuneCorps
(http://odeo.com/audio/3493513/view)
earlier this week and I appreciate your openness. It also went a long way in answering the questions I had yesterday. I'm still curious if Zune was built from Media Center PMC foundations or did you all start from scratch?

I got my zune a couple days ago and used it this weekend. Kinda funny cuz I was watching Avatar on it and got into a discussion with two folks about it and its "future" and possibilities. Another guy joined in, and he works in a gaming/electronic store.

Overall experience - good. But there are some MP3s that won't play or sync. Not sure why but it'll play in my ipod.. =/

grrr, i found another quirk! While changing the title of a song, when you press SHIFT + SPACE BAR, it stops the music and minimizes the software... FIX IT PLEASE!

This isn't looking good.

NPD Week two - zune in 5th place (tied with Disney's player) with 2.1 percent share of the market.

So I'm a troll, eh?

Well, week 2 numbers are out and I don't see any Zunies posting the numbers.

The Zune dropped to 5th place behind Memorex and Disney who I didn't even know made mp3 players.

I'd like to point out that it's been over eleven days and four posts detailing the tools you need, why only Microsoft codecs matter, a general screed against portable video, and a bunch of cop outs since you told us you'd be posting tutorials... Weren't you supposed to post a simple how-to about transferring video? Why does it take 10+ days and 4+ posts?

Ughh... This stuff is getting worse every day.
