Shipping....

Ah, shipping is nice.

We're finally out the door at last. People can go buy a Zune. We're simultaneously partying and working.

Last night we had our ship party at a private event in Seattle. Today we had a celebration (I missed as I was at the Shareholder's meeting) and got our ship gifts - nifty uniqely colored Zunes.

On another note, things were pretty exciting last week; we had amazing flooding out near my house in snoqualmie. Nice pictures here http://flickr.com/search/?q=snoqualmie+flood&m=text. I was driving home across one of the roads and ended up in a puddle that got deeper...and deeper...until I noticed there was a crosscurrent - the river was coming across the road! Got out just in time and then they closed the road.

I just picked up the black one and it looks lovely. The BestBuy I went to had already sold 8 by noon which I thought was a pretty good start.

The only thing I'm wondering about is... How is the heck do you play music off of the device via the Zune software? I can browse the library on the Zune all day but there isn't any option to actually play the music! All my music is straight MP3 so it can't be a codec issue.

I know I must be missing something obvious because a) almost every MP3 player out there allows this and b) it would be such an amazingly stupid thing to leave out that I know Microsoft wouldn't forget it.

I sync music from home and want to play it at work from my installed Zune software but so far I can't figure out how. Any help? This is my #1 way of listening to music and if I can't get this to work I'll sadly need to return the device. Thanks!

Just select the Zune device name in Zune Software(PC) and then select track you want to play.

Been to two Best Buy's today.. along with a Target. No Zune displays out! Really disappointing. I'm going to hold out until I can see all three colors in person.

Surprised the retailers weren't making a bigger push... I wonder how many others are holding out due to the lack of demo units.

Hey,

Congrats on the launch. However, please get back to work ASAP (no offense). The Zune is great, but a lot of users are complaining about some stuff, which can be easily fixed. If you want the Zune to be successful, please be as quick as you can before Zune gets a bad reputation.

Congrats. Any word when an update will be released for Vista?

Actually anonymous that doesn't work. From what I can tell you can't play media directly from the Zune via the software. This will be a show stopper for me.

It's not possible to play the music via the software? That just sounds stupid if you ask me...

I can see Apple is announcing a new "feature" today; airplane seat iPod docks! How cool is that?! Very cool if you ask me!

I hope there's some clarification on playing through the software... I just don't undstand some of the oddball descisions that seem to have been made.

I haven't been able to delete songs from the player either. It seems that they really did leave this out.

congrats.

Some recommendations:

1) Brown is cool. I'd get on to match my brown shoes... not.
2) Portable hard drives are useless.
3) Hmmm... I have WMP, it has a lot of my music, and all of my pictures. Why on god's good earth would I ever consider making a MS Zune work with MS WMP... I'm so silly. I'll just go buy a Media PC.
4) I get to play a transfered song three times - yeah, cool - not! Take the google approach, do it, worry about the lawyers later. (GoogleBooks). Hey, just make it file sharing with the music files exposed.
5) Make it bigger and heavier next time. It's like those weights folks strap around their ankels. The Zune builds strength.
6) Apple can't add WiFi and file sharing to the iPod. They probably will, and they'll probably throw in wireless sync just for fun.

I'm getting carried away. As a stock holder I was hoping you folks would have done a better job. This thing is far from an iPod Killer, it's not much better than a Dell DJ. The iPod still rules. As you guys work another year to get the current iPod feature set the folks at Apple will just get better. Good thing I AAPL too.

zune needs an update real fast and good too !! It's not looking good. The player and player interface seems fine but the software and feature set needs serious help. Getting the basics right isn't going to be enough and you guys seemed to have missed the boat on that too!! Make the wireless feature count and make it quick too !!

OK, Love the Zune.

LOVE the Zune. A media machine, not a game toy, or a freakin clock, a media machine....

Can't seem to get the software to update the album art on my Zune tho. Am I missing something? Don't want to have wipe and refill the Zune. Got any idears?

Thanks

Are there plans for an sdk to transfer outside of the Zunes software? If not will a api for controlling the Zune software much be made available so developers could automate Zune to do certain tasks?

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer of contact.

I bought the white one yesterday at target.

The device looks great, but you guys forgot to add 2 basic features: a clock and text/e-book reader.

Bill,

Is there any hope of Zune supporting the DRM from MS-based MTV-born URGE music store? If not, does the company have a reason for not supporting its own DRM with these other services?

Giovanni: The DRM behind Urge (in addition to Napster, MusicMatch, WalMart (and others ), called PlaysForSure is not compatable with the Zune device itself, but as David said in an interview with ClicZune, Zune DRM should work with PlaysForSure-compatible devices.

I personally love my Urge subscription, but unfortunately it seems that for the RIAA to agree to the Zune's wireless sharing, some songs would not be allowed to be sent, in addition to adding further features that are pretty much zune-specific. There *are* ways to free your purchased music from PlaysForSure restrictions so that they will play on the Zune, but unless you really have a large amount of music you bought (at about $.99 per song), it would probably be better from a legal standpoint to just re-purchase, or get a subscription.

Hope this helps.

@Those above who are having problems playing Zune music from software:

Like iPod/iTunes, the Zune device is a delivery mechanism for the Zune software. Setup your music in the Zune program, then sync, and your Zune device will be similarly setup.

If a song is on the Zune device, then it must also be in your program's library. Play songs from the library. The option to play music from the device through the program isn't needed.

Perhaps Microsoft could allow the option (but start the song from the library) just to avoid new-user confusion.

When is the update to use the zune as a hard drive ;)

Hello,
I recently bought the zune, and let me tell you its sexy. I first bought the white one, but then decided to get the brown.. For some reason people have been telling me that the brown one looks awesome. So I got it!
Anyways, I am pretty sure that you guys are busy dealing with all these responses that the customers are saying about the zune. It’s a heavy load you guys have and a big problem too. If you guys think its not a problem…well… many of the innocent people that don’t know very much about the zune will soon know the problems its having making the customers not want to buy the zune and stick with an Ipod (which suck).
Now, why in the world you guys not have a notes in there? Ipod has it! Maybe its because many of your zune employees never used the Ipod note file before. Or why not have the Calendar, I always used my Ipod to see events that would take in the near future (such like preparing the day for buying a zune!).
Dealing with the video codec’s I’m not going to touch on because its just useless to deal with you guys. The codec’s are bad for the zune, you guys should have more codec’s available (DivX, avi, etc). if you don’t….guess what? Apple will!
Here is another thing I thought when I plugged my zune into my computer with…a…USB plug. Why do I have to plug this with a USB, it has a wifi. Why don’t you guys start working hard to get an update that will allow the zune connect to the computer using the wifi device… and if your thinking its impossible… well, look at Nintendo’s DS and Wii both are wifi devices. This is another thing apple is probably celebrating at there secret laboratory. The sharing is horrible, although I haven’t tried it yet, reading articles and blogs helped me realize what I have done. This by far will make apple superior than you guys if you guys don’t get up your asses and do something about it. I remembered that while being on my campus with my notebook, on my itunes I can see other peoples profile and in there profile were all the songs and videos they had to share. I am pretty sure apple will do this to their new ipod allowing there ipod to share music without asking the person nor stealing music. It’ll be simple, just get in a close range and listen to whatever they have. (I hope you guys are thinking about this and are starting to deal with this.)
If you guys wait later in the year 2007 you will give apple an advantage to take over and make you guys look bad… and that’s not good for me knowing that I bought a zune.
Now…to enter in the subject of Xbox 360. I was sad knowing that my zune pretty much didn’t do the things I wanted it to do, such like controlling the Xbox with my zune through wifi or listening to songs via wifi through my zune. Or putting them on my Xbox hard drive or getting song from my Xbox to my zune. This by far made me think twice about the zune. If things don’t get better in Dec. ill be returning the zune soon and get a Nintendo Wii instead (for the same price).
Oh yeah by the way… if you think that I’m an apple lover, you are wrong. I hate Ipods, so c’mon Zune Get working!
