Zune as mass storage?

A number of sites (e.g., http://www.getusb.info/?p=374) are posting a hack to get your Zune to work as a storage device as well as a music device. That's fine, but folks should know the downside of this hack.
  • First, it will mean that you can't listen to your Zune while it's connected to your PC. Out of the box you can charge your Zune while listening to music by not running the Zune client. If you use this hack, then Windows explorer grabs the device while it's connected and it stays in "sync" mode the entire time.
  • Second, it will make your Zune act like any old device, and you'll have to deal with the lovely autoplay dialog box every time you plug it in.

Just fyi...

sorry David, but you should really try the hack for yourself. None of those statements are true. Even with the hack applied, the Zune will not sync to the PC (but charge) unless you open up Zune software. Autoplay is not an issue either.

The first point doesn't really make sense to me, do people listen to their Zune, via headphones, while sitting at their computer? Why not just play the music directly from the computer?

Better yet, the Zune software should be able to stream music from the Zune. I *HATE* that you can't play music directly off the Zune via the software. It means when I want to play music at work from my Zune I have to "Copy From Device" first. Annoying.

Second, the autoplay dialog, while annoying, is easy to get rid of.

All that said though I don't see much benefit to this hack. I have all 30GB stuffed with music and I have a sleek little external WD Passport 120GB drive for my data transferring needs.

If greek goat is right, then I'll have to eat my words. I'll try the hack out tonight and see.

Yeah, Greek goat is right, David. It seems pretty easily reversable too, but the only issue is the ease of which you can sync files to and from the Zune via Explorer.

I'm to understand that, like most of the other Zune stuff, this is a variant of MTP, which was intentionally left closed off due to the ability to easily take files from the inbox off? If so, maybe you guys could find some other clever way to keep the files drm'd, or *gasp* just forget about the whole stupid concept? (I know, I know, barking up the wrong tree...)

I confirm what GreekGoat said. But I believe you should fix it... meaning the USB hack should support write access also :)
(Some say they've got write access, but not me. I didn't try many times though)

Check here:
Use Zune as a USB external disk

Why dont you release a firmware update that will let people use the zune as a mass storage device? I have 13.76gb free and it would be great to use it for anything I want.
