I can't access your tmpgenc encoding profile (404). Can you just list the parameters?

yes. Just pick 800kbps video, 128kbps audio, and 320x240.

Hello,
I am sorry if this is the wrong area to post this. I could not find a generic post titled ‘Zune experience’.

I have been following Zune from the very beginning. I have a brown Zune and I like it. I am perhaps one of the guys who did not have any problem installing the Zune and my device has been working just fine.

However that’s not true for a lot of other people. A colleague of mine just bought a Zune and he has a lot of problems. When he first attached it to the computer the large battery showed up on the display so he left it for charging. After charging it for the whole night the battery on the display is still there. So today he will go and exchange it.

The point I am making is that the bugs in the device and Zune software is really turning people off. I really do understand that with a 1 G device and software there are going to be some problems, however the amount of bugs seems to be very high.

After seeing all the negative developments I was wondering what your thoughts are on the following:

1. Bugs….was it at the same level as anticipated or much worse.
2. Aprox how soon will a patch be released for bug fixes (not new features).
3. It was always going to be hard for MS to establish themselves with the music crowed. With a device like Zune perception matters a lot and its hard to change it. So in about 6 months even if you fix all the problems most of the people are still going to remember the reviews from today. How will you change this perception?
4. Do you think now that the device was rushed a bit and it would have been better to hold off a little longer?

Basically I am trying to understand how and who you will appeal to with Zune. Initially I though you will be going after the hardcore music fan base. However that base is pretty much with Apple and have this ‘Apple can do no wrong’ mentality. And the mainstream has not been targeted well enough. I don’t think the ads and positioning has been for main stream at all. Sometime I wonder that a single device just before holidays was a way for you guys to just get a feel of the market and market share is just ‘good to have’.

I also do have another complaint. I have read a number of times that feature ‘x’ or feature ‘y’ is not main stream, or that it’s not that important. For example you did mention that the resolution on Zune is more than enough and high resolution is not required. I agree with that. However you have to realize that even if a feature is never going to be used by a user the option of not being able to use it does effect their perception of device. For consumer its not important if they will use the feature ‘x’ but it is important that they have the option to use the feature ‘x’ should they decide to (even if that is just once in product life).

In future I really think you will have to build a momentum some how. I know it’s a multi year strategy but the interest level has to be maintained and Zune has to stay relevant. Right now I just don’t know what to say when I have to recommend Zune.

I really hope you guys do well. I not looking for you guys to topple iPod. I really don’t care about that as long as you guys are good number two and there is an alternative in the market.

Did David really say high resolution isn't needed? That TV cable output and the Xbox 360 USB connectivity says otherwise... 640 x 480 at a minimum should be supported.

Is 640 x 480 technically impossible with the Zune for some odd reason? Can't Zune downscale to 320 x 240 for direct Zune playback and allow 640 x 480 via TV out or USB/Xbox 360?

high res is indeed nifty and cool for the TV Out scenario, no doubt.

640x480 is 'hi-res' all of a sudden?

I love the way definitions change based on the limitations of what people are selling.

It would be 'nifty' to have one set of videos which I could watch on the Zune & stream to the my xbox360 instead of having 2 copies at different resolutions. Much the same way I use iTunes/AppleTV/iPod.

(forgotten I had this account)
