DVD Decrypter - shut down
I'm sure nobody reading this post knows anything about it, but I recently discoverd that DVD Decrypter has been officially shut down by Macrovision. When I went to investigate, I found this story. There are several amazing things about this:
- It took amazingly long - like 2-3 years - to shut down this blatant bit of questionable software. Every time I saw it was still up in very public venues, I shook my head in wonder.
- Apparently Macrovision shut it down in part by buying the software and then issuing cease-and-decists against hosting web sites.
Of course, the Google Adwords banner on the right side of the story hints at the future of this space...

what I don't understand is what is so wrong about copying dvds I BOUGHT onto my Zune? I am not going to pay an arm and a leg ( even if it were available ) to purchase a movie that I can only watch on my zune.
DVDs are still the easiest and quickest way to watch movies, and while the added conveinence of watching them on my zune is nice, it isn't worth paying $10 again.
Give me a legal way to watch DVDs on my portable media player of choice, or charge me an extra 3 bucks at the store for the ability to also download it to my player and I will be happy.

The Zune should add a feature allowing users to download DVDs into the Zune!
really old news, but the latest version is mirrored all over the web.
As DVD ripping, I think it is fair use to rip it as long as you own it and do not distribute it. The easiest way to rip DVDs to Zune is ImTOO DVD to Zune Converter 4 or any other ImTOO/Xilisoft DVD rippers, all the other rippers I know of do not convert to wmv.
Yes, that article is from late 2005. But not surprisingly, DVD Decrypter is still widely available through mirror sites etc.
Macrovision didn't buy DVDdecryptor LightningUK (the author) had to hand over all rights to it as he infringed on Macrovision patents.
