skipping update
A number of comments have mentioned the reports of skipping and unresponsiveness on my part. I'm sorry, and definitely don't intend to bury the topic by any means. For a progress update:
- I took the mails folks sent me, compiled, and forwarded to the test team
- They're investigating and trying to repro to understand the thing(s) that might be causing skipping

David,
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
It really does mean a lot that you would let us know something.
BTW the tech team won't have to try to repro on any new zunes because I just exchanged my old zune at Best Buy and the guy told me that he's had a "butt load" come back with the same problem. So guess what? You've got plenty coming back. Mine is the one with the Micheal Jordan background (Wizards uniform) LOL.
Anyways thanks for the update
Mine skips sometimes too but I think it is a software issue, not hardware, so I'm not exchanging mine.
Some bloggers recommend leaving the display "always" on with stop it. I find if I just click Left to restart it plays without the skip at the beginning.
My experience with software tells me that finding the source of the problem is the issue, the fix will be easy.
I just had the problem recently when listening to some podcasts.
had never even heard of the problem before.
hope it gets resolved. I still love my zune and wouldn't want to return it because of it.
My Zune is filled with about 1/3 ripped from my CD's and 2/3 downloaded with a Zune Pass. The skipping issue was present from the start on the Zune pass media. As the device filled, it became worse. The work around I have found to minimize the skipping is setting the backlight to always be on and having the brightness level on full.
When a track starts playing, while it may not be skipping, I almost always notice that for about the first 30 seconds the track is playing, the elasped time is not updating, or will update for a couple of seconds every 5-6 seconds for a second or 2. Also, the buttons become unresponsive during this time as well. The button clicks are not lost, they will be processed by the player when it is able.
For myself, at the present time I am willing to tolerate this problem as the device is new and it should be resolvable via a software update.
Overall, I really like the device and the Zune pass. My least favorite part of the experience has been with zune media software on the pc. I find it incredible annoying with the amount of time it takes to recognize the device and sync media to the device. Plus the limited number of genre's to filter music by, for example, no blue's genre, that's insane.
I think Zune is a very good start, but there are many rough edges that need to be addressed quickly.
I also ha e the skipping issue, it seems to have only started after the 1.2 update or because I now have about 10 GB on my zune.
I too have skipping problems, I tried to return it to Walmart but they said I need to call customer support, from everything I have read customer support is of no help if you call in. My problem is the same as everyone else's, begins skipping at the beginning and if you turn the back light on or restart it plays fine. I am rather disappointed and I wish I had never bought it. The worst part is we have two and they both do it. They are both updated to the latest firmware so there is nothing I can do but wait for the Zune to face enough heat and pressure that we get results. As far as a I can tell from my experience and what I have read all the problems start when using Zune market place or maybe even more specifically Zune pass. I am curious where this issue will go.
*bangs head against the wall*
*rinse*
*repeat*
I was so excited to get this, because I don't like the iPod, but this skipping is driving me crazy. What's worse is that when I try to recreate it for my boyfriend and the people at bestbuy, I couldn't. They think it's all in my head. I'm ready to drive the 10 miles to Redmond and scream.
I'm at the point of "Screw this, I'm getting an iPod" stage.
Same problem, a lot of the files I've downloaded through the Zune Marketplace skips. I've changed the background light to always on. It has stopped skipping. I'm not too happy about that, as the battery life decreases noticably, but it beats the skipping.
I am glad that you are working on this skipping issue. You probably have all the information you need but if not, it seems to only skip when the backlight turns out. The skipping only lasts for about 5-10 seconds and during that time the buttons on the unit do not work. After the skipping is done whatever buttons you had pressed while it was skipping activate. (i.e. If you tried to turn up/down the sound it will do that when the skipping is done.)
I had been waiting to get my Zune for a long time. Now that I have one I hope that this minor issue can be resolved before word-of-mouth distroys the Zune!
Just acquired a Zune last week.
Have had some skipping problems as well.
I'll describe the sequence of events in order.
Monday morning I impatiently yanked the Zune out of it's cradle in the middle of a sync as I was running out the door to work.
The zune immediately locked up and none of the buttons did anything at all. About 10 seconds later it happily rebooted and seemed fine.
That was when my skipping problems began.
Assuming that I had corrupted the file system, Monday evening I erased my zune and told it to sync again.
Got up the next morning to find that the sync had failed and the battery on the zune was dead.
I guess the USB port on my laptop doesn't give out enough power.
Still had plenty of skipping problems with various songs.
Last night I plugged the zune into a powered USB hub. Erased the zune again. And synced again.
Got up this morning and the sync had completed, the battery was fully charged, and my zune is FULL.
Have been playing all day and have not had any skipping whatsoever.
Hope this helps.
Well it's been quite a while and there is still this incredibly annoying skipping problem. Any status Dave????
