What... 50,000... no way. There is just no way. I don't have the foggiest idea how many Zune units have sold but I can say that personally I have seen quite a few and I live in a part of the country that isn't likely to just go out and buy a Zune for the hell of it.
Yeah, I laughed when I saw that 50k figure in his blog last year. As much as that was funny, I'm more worried about how long its going to take Zune to reach 20+ mil units. Thats the only way MS going to have negotiating power with the studios & labels. Right now, Zune needs more positive word of mouth. Thats only going to happen by wowing the current user base with new content and features, at a reasonable price.
I think more important than the sales figures is the perception of the product. I think it's losing a bit of steam. People generally just don't seem interested in it. And, those that do have it are still struggling with skipping issues to this day....
Thats for sure Sportsunit. It's becoming more and more of a joke about how Microsoft is ignoring the skipping issue with this hardware. The funny/sad part of this whole thing is that last month when I gave up on the Zune because of the skipping and got an iPod, I swear I couldn't even give the thing away to friends and family. Nobody wanted it. And I think that's a sad statement on Microsoft's preparation-for-market in this instance (one of many unfortunately)
I don't know if you've noticed...But nobody cares anymore! I've given up on my Zune as well (for the skipping issue). I exchanged my ZUNE for an IPOD and I'm much happier. So you may have sold more than 50K but how many have been returned? In my 35,000 person town with a Best Buy; for every 3 sold 1 comes back.
Heck you work for Microsoft (Zune team) and you blog more about Apple?????
Okay so you've apparently locked out ChrisP for commenting so I'll comment as anonymous now.
Umm I don't know where you guys have been but I cen tell you that my sites traffic has been going up a lot lately. I've talked with a few other people with Zune sites and they have also noticed similar growth in traffic. And the skipping problem sounds like it is pretty isolated. And as far as the "no one wants it" argument goes... give me a break. I had the same problem with an ipod because my friends could tell I didn't think the product was good.
A Zune contributor by day, I'm also an avid hiker, biker, and father of three, I also work doing industry analysis and strategy.
In previous lives, I've been a backcountry ski patroller, worked on the Windows Media Player, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Team Manager 97, been a researcher in Cognitive Neuroscience, a grad student, and a kid.

Yes, I can say we've sold many times that.

There is officially nothing to be said about the Zune anymore.
Denying the most absurd prediction made months ago? That's what you got? Many times more than 50,000? That's what you got?
"Denying" this "prediction" now proves Robertson's point.
David,
