New policy - Now with deleted abusive comments!

I was reading some of the comment strings on the last post, and got cranky about some of the abusive language from anonymous posters. I've strictly refrained from deleting comments, but some of these were over the top, plus from the cowardly veil of anonymity. It's too bad, because some of them had interesting points of view embedded in the abuse, and I'm always happy to learn from comments. However....

In the interest of transparancy, I'll announce that I'm going to start nuking anonymous posts that I consider to be over-the-top nasty.

Good move. Some people become total idiots online.

That said, what impact to you think this move will have on the future of the wma format?

If/when Zune marketplace offers drm-free downloads, do you think Microsoft will stick with their proprietary wma format, or move to standard formats like mp3 or aac?

I can't comment on futures (or for all of microsoft!), but I think you should expect Zune to think about the how to sell the most devices first and format strategery second.

Because I called your stupid theory stupid? You're kidding. It's not abusive: it's factual.

David, WIth the EMI/Apple announement I think that format strategy just became an important part of how to sell more devices.

Why don't you just disable anonymous commenting? Bill did it, and there haven't been too many abusive commenters (but to be fair, not too many regular ones either).

It seems that there's no real disadvantage to requiring a login. Most people have a Google account, and it keeps the confusion away from the numerous anonymouses. I just wish Cesar would employ something along these lines on his blog. Anonymity is too easy to hide behind.

Great idea; I'll try with anonymous off and see how that goes.

And now we play the waiting game.

I am alright with you deleting abusive comments. I'm not so sure it does any good to delete comments that call into question your knowledge on a subject that you present in this blog.
