So, I take it we'll mysteriously see a 3.5-inch touchscreen Zune with phone functions in late 2008? ;)
or an iPhone
So what are your top line thoughts about the device Dave? Is it a potential game changer for the market?
I agree that the text editing needs some tweaking. Have you tried playing back media on iPhone? They raised the bar for a portable media player.
A couple of things Microsoft should consider
- Safari Browser is dangerous because it will get widespread usage. They will likely build it into their upcoming iPods, expanding usage even more. Microsoft needs to push DeepFish out asap to all portable devices.
- Develop a high-end multi-touch Zune to stay competitive.
- Accelerate development of "Photon".
- You must start releasing significant new functionality/access for Zune.
johncz: People hate safari. The iPhone launch, even by Apple standards, was a whole lot of hot air.
Touch screen mp3 players aren't that desperately needed that people are willing to pay $500 for only a few gigs. If the iPhone didn't have the phone attached to it, there's no way in hell even Apple could sell it for that much. The type of customer who has $600 to blow on an mp3 player/phone doesn't need a wireless mobile device for actual usage. They likely have a laptop with them, or are willing to wait until they do. I don't see the iPhone as a significant threat to Zune sales, and especially not because of the browser, though I agree pushing out Deepfish would be beneficial. If anything, the iPhone threatens Windows CE development if for nothing more than to push it to develop a fancier UI.
